FOREWORD

In the current decade, technology for Optical microscopy has been progressing with the development of related opto-electronic technologies such as femtosecond lasers, nanometrically controllable scanners and stages, and highly sensitive photo-detectors, together with the development of digital image processing for three-dimensional real-time full-color digital movies. Nonlinear optical microscopy including multi-photon excited fluorescence microscopy, time-resolved micro-spectroscopy, and second-harmonic and coherent anti-Stokes Raman imaging are rapidly progressing. High-resolution microscopy including near-field scanning optical microscopy, four-pi confocal microscopy, and coherence probe microscopy also constitute a major research topic in the field of microscopy.

Application of such an advanced technology of optical microscopy covers not only biology, material and quantum device imaging and analysis, but covers also the modification, manipulation, and fabrication of micro/nano structures such as optical data storage, laser tweezer and trapping, laser micromachining, laser micro-surgery, photo micro-lithography and photo-micro-fabrication.

A series of FOM conferences have been held each year for over ten years. FOM 2000 is organized as a joint international conference consisting of the 12th International Conference on Confocal Microscopy, the 13th International Conference on 3D Image Processing and Microscopy, and SLM-25, semi-annual meeting of the Society for Laser Microscopy, Japan.

FOM 2000 will be held in Shirahama or in Japanese, "the white beach", 200km south to the city of Osaka, Japan. Shirahama is one of the oldest resort area in Japan and is located on the Pacific Ocean with a number of hot springs, beautiful beaches and cliffs. In this conference, all the participants will stay together at the Coganoi Bay Hotel, to discuss and exchange new developments and latest research results in a convivial and friendship environment.
