Message from Prof. Kawata - Japanese -
In 2002, LaSIE has made a big reformation. I moved to the newly established Department of Information and Physical Sciences, while serving as a joint professor of Applied Physics Department. Osamu Nakamura and Yasushi Inouye moved to the Graduate School of Frontier Biosciences, as a Professor and an Associate Professor, respectively. Zouheir Sekkat moved to Handai Frontier Research Center as a Professor. Hong-Bo Sun and Katsumasa Fujita have both been promoted to Assistant Professors. Although LaSIE has been divided into four research organizations, we do the research together.

Hidekazu Ishitobi and Satoru Shoji were awarded their Ph.D. degrees in March, and Nick Smith in September. They remain in LaSIE as postdoctoral members. Xuan-Ming Duan joined LaSIE from GE Plastics in April and Verma Prabhat from Kyoto Institute of Technology in October. Takahiro Ode from Lasertec Corporation has joined LaSIE as a Professor at FRC since October. Makiko Aoki, Aki Utsunomiya, Rieko Sato, and Hiromi Wakita also joined for various secretarial works this year. Student exchanges were also active: Benjamin Levine from Paul Sabatier University, France, Yong-Hak Park from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Korea, and Hyun-Kwan Yang from Hannam University, Korea, stayed at LaSIE for a couple of months. Andreas Nicol returned to Mainz, Germany in October after his one-year study in LaSIE.

As annual events of LaSIE, we had a Welcome School at Awaji Yumebutai International Conference Center in May, a Summer School in Shirahama in July, and a Winter School (now called Minami Conference) again at Awaji Yumebutai. We also opened a booth in some exhibitions, such as The 2nd Handai Frontier Symposium in Tokyo in September, The Opening Ceremony of Handai Museum at the atrium of NHK Osaka in October, Nikkei Nanotech Fair in Marunouchi Building and Micromachine 2002 in Science Museum, both in November in Tokyo. We also organized several international conferences this year: New Trends and Future in 3D Multilayer Memory at Koku-Kaikan on May 22 and 23, Japan-Taiwan Symposium on Nanophotonics Technology at Osaka University Convention Centre on November 5 and 6, and University Science Symposium on Nanotechnology and Nanoscience Using Light at International Conference Center, in Kobe on December 14 and 15.

Finally we would appreciate your continuous support and collaboration for our laboratory in the year of 2003.

January, 2003

Satoshi Kawata
