  • A laboratory tour from Twente Univ., Nobember 20th, 2009
    The thirty graduated students and the two teachers from Twente Univ. visited our laboratory on Nobember 20th, 2009. They observed the latest instruments for 3D nano-fabrication, near-field scanning optical microscopy, super-resolved microscopy.     Japan - France symposium has been held on Octorber 26-29, 2009 in Marseille, France. This was the second symposium, and 30 scientists from Japan, France and USA have discussed recent advances in their researches.

    Mr. Maurizio Righini from Institut de Ciencies Fotoniques (ICFO), Spain, will stay in LaSIE for 3 months from May 11th for research collaboration on optical trapping.

    Mr. Juan Manuel Merlo Ramirez has joined LaSIE since September 1 as an exchange student from INAOE (National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics, Mexico). He will stay in our lab for 4 months.

    Our paper, "Finer features for functional microdevices, Nature 412, 697 (2001)," has been cited over 500 times in scientific research papers (20 August 2008).

  • Andrea Barrett from Georgia Institute of Technology
    Andrea Barrett from Georgia Institute of Technology joined LaSIE from June 4 under the NanoJapan program sponsored by the NSF (National Science Foundation). She stayed in our lab for 2 months.

  • Prof. Brian Orr from Macquarie University
    On the 23rd of July, Professor Brian Orr visited the Department of Applied Physics, Deparment of Frontier Biosciences and the Photonics Center. Brian Orr is a professor of Molecular and Optical Physics, as well as the Director of the MQ Photonics Research Centre, based at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia.

  • M'hammed Chraibi from Al Akhawayn University
    Mr. M'hammed Chraibi has joined LaSIE since June 23 as an exchange student between Al Akhawayn University and Osaka University. He will stay in our lab for 11 months.

  • FOM 2008 in Awaji Island
    Focus on Microscopy 2008 (FOM 2008), the largest conference on advanced microscope was held in Osaka, Awaji Island, Japan on April 13-16. Prof. Kawata as a co-chair organized the conference.

    Prof. Kawata was decorated with a purple ribbon medal from the government of Japan for his contribution to applied physics research (2 Nov 2007).

  • Prof. Mikael Lindgren from The Norweigian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
    Prof. Lindgren Mikael from The Norweigian University of Science and Technology, will stay in LaSIE for two months under the invitation fellowship program for research in Japan by Japan Society of the Promotion of Science (JSPS). He will work on developing a novel probe for bio-imaging using nonlinear spectroscopy.

    Prof. Thomas Ebbesen from University Louis Pasteur in France, visited LaSIE on October 15, 2007.

  • Ms. Meiling Zheng will stay with us
    Ms. Meiling Zheng from the Chinese Academy of Sciences will stay with us from October 3rd, 2007 for approximately one and a half years. She research carboxysilane dendrimers and related applications for microscopy.

    Dr. Nicholas Isaac Smith has been appointed as a lecturer of the Photonics Center, Osaka University, on October 1, 2007.

  • Dr. Katsumasa Fujita has been appointed as an associate professor
    Dr. Katsumasa Fujita has been appointed as an associate professor of the Department of Applied Physics, Osaka University, on 16 August, 2007.

  • Prof. Naomi Halas from Rice University, USA
    Prof. Naomi Halas from Rice University, USA, visited us on the 31st July and the 1st of August, 2007. Prof. Halas is widely known for research on nanoshells and plasmonics, and her visit allowed us to discuss applications and future prospects of plasmonics. She leaves our lab to give a seminar at the Japan Society of Applied Physics (JSAP) 75th anniversary symposium.

  • Prof. Fausto Rossi from Polytechnic University of Torino, Italy
    Italian physicists Prof Fausto Rossi and Prof Rita Lotti visited on July the 30th, and Prof Rossi gave us a challenging seminar on quantum modelling of cascade lasers and other complex optical systems. Profs Rossi and Lotti are investigating real optical systems from a quantum-level approach, and have successfully predicted several notable optical effects before they have been later experimentally observed. Prof Rossi was also the Phd advisor of Dr Remo Proietti, who is currently a post-doctoral fellow in our lab.

  • Paul Thompson and Matthew Carlson from the US
    Two undergraduate students from the US, Paul Thompson (Rice University) and Matthew Carlson (University of Wisconsin), will stay in LaSIE for two months starting from June 4th under the support of Nano Japan Program by National Science Foundation. Paul and Matthew will work on research projects of Biophotonics and Nanophotonics.

  • Ya Qi has left for China
    Ms. Qi Ya has finished her research in Osaka University and left for China on March 31, 2007. She worked on laser fabrication of photonics crystals and reported her achievement in the LaSIE seminar on March 20, 2007.

    Dr. Yuika Saito has been appointed as a lecturer of the Faculty of Engineering, Osaka University, on November 1, 2006.

  • Dr. Prabhat Verma has been appointed as an associate professor
    Dr. Prabhat Verma, who was working with us as a designated associate professor of the Department of Applied Physics, has now joined us as an associate professor of the Department of Frontier Biosciences, Osaka University, starting from October 1, 2006.

    Dr.Alka Ingale stayed in LaSIE for one month from August 25. Alka is from the Raja Ramanna Centre For Advanced Technology and did near field photonics research with us.

    Edward J. Botcherby (Ed) from Oxford University stayed in our lab from July 3 to 14 for the 2nd COE summer school of Dpt. of Frontier Biosciences (FBS). Ed was chosen as a speaker of FBC colloquium. He gave a talk about "Scanning two-photon fluorescence microscopy with extended depth of focus" in the colloquium.

  • Prof. Konig and Dr. Campagnola's visit
    Prof. Konig (Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering, Germany) and Dr. Campagnola (Connecticut Univ., USA) visted our lab on 4th July. We enjoyed the seminar and discussion on biophotonics research.

    Open lab. for high school students was held on 8-9 August, 2005. The students of Imabari-nishi, Onomichi-kita, Kannonjidaiichi, marugame high school visted LaSIE, and had a experience of study in LaSIE.

  • Prof. Qihuang Gong from Peking University, China
    Prof. Qihuang Gong visited our lab and we have discussed nonlinear opitcs and its applications to varieties of field. He gave a talk "The application of femtosecond laser to functional optical materials and devices" in LaSIE seminar on 11th August.

  • Prof. Mark Brongersma's stayed in LaSIE
    Prof. Mark Brongersma from Materials Science and Engineering, Stanford University stayed in LaSIE. He talked about "Towards CMOS Compatible Nanophotonics and Plasmonics " in a LaSIE seminar on July 19.

  • Ms. Jin Sun Park from Hannam University, Korea
    Ms. Jin Sun Park is visiting our lab for collaboration research between Prof. Kwang-Sup Lee's lab in Hannam Univeristy and our lab. Her stay started from 15 July and she will stay with us for 40 days to study two-photon photofabrication technique and its applications.

  • Dr. Martin Booth from Oxford University, UK
    Dr. Martin Booth visited our lab for collaboration research on adaptive optics from 4 July. He stayed with us for about a week.

  • Ms. Ran Hee Kim from Hannam University, Korea
    Ms. Ran Hee Kim visited our lab for collaboration research between Prof. Kwang-Sup Lee's lab in Hannam University and our lab. Her stay started from 26 June and stayed with us for about two months to study two-photon photofabrication technique and its applications.
