We are pleased to welcome the scientists interested in research on near field optics, NFO, to the famous Japanese resort area of Shirahama. This area is known for its hot spring along the beach where we can exchange and discuss the recent research progress in NFO. You will enjoy a nice ocean view, where a small rocky island glows with beautiful sunsets that will remind you of our NFO Conference's logo, and also its success.

This conference is the fifth International Conference on Near Field Optics and Related Techniques (NFO-5), and is the first to be held in Asia (after Besancon 1992, Raleigh 1993, Brno, 1995, and Jerusalem, 1997). Near Field Optics is one of the most active research areas in science and technology. It enables us to look at the nanoscopic world, using light beyond the diffraction limit, or to manipulate and fabricate mesoscopic-scale structures. In the conference, many scientists in the world propose new theories, instrumentation and applications and show analyses, and experimental results.
